ORPHAN VILLAGE LATEST JOB VACANCY FOR SEVERAL POSITIONS (CAREERS 2011)

Orphan Village

Placement description
The Osu Children's Home in Ghana began as a child care society which operated from Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, where the Cripples Home is now located. The society was established in 1949 by a Norwegian woman with the help of several Ghanaian women to care for orphans and vulnerable children. The number of
these children increased over time as a result of industrialization and urbanization. In 1962, the society was taken over by the then government of Ghana and was placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Welfare. It was renamed the “Osu Children’s Home” when the organization moved to its present location and has since operated as a haven for children exposed to moral and physical danger.

The organization provides a home for these vulnerable children at all levels of education from senior high school, special needs schools, all the way down to pre-school. Basic schooling is done within the community and children are given the opportunity to make the best of their abilities without hindrance. This is achieved through the awarding of scholarships by several renowned schools, sponsorships by individuals and organisations, and the Childrens Home’s resources. It is the mission of Osu Children’s Home to provide children with appropriate care and clearly established regulations and procedures to afford them hope for a better future. This hope comes from the efforts to fully reintegrate all those children in the Home back into mainstream society.

The organization’s current operations and projects include providing needed care for the 250 children in the home (aged 0 -23 years), sourcing for increased funding for the expansion of some of the facilities and buying a better operating vehicle, working to reunite the children in the home with their families or be adopted, and designing and fundraising for a new and improved nursery for the daily increasing number of infants at the home.
